P.G.I. MELANNURCA
Melannurca, the “queen of apples”, pride of the Agricultural Company La Selva, is a typical product of the Alto Casertano area. Extremely tasty and flavourful fruit, the Annurca is famous for its juicy, crisp and firm pulp, with a slight acid and aromatic taste. Compared to other apples, the Annurca peculiarity is the processing. To ensure an intact fruit, without defects or injuries, during October, the growers harvest the partially ripe fruits and store them in special “melai” where the apples are left for about two months. Placed on the grounds on straw-covered racks, with the least flushed part exposed to sunlight, the Annurca apples are periodically turned until they reach their typical natural red colour. Thanks to its lonh history, the Annurca apple has acquired the protected geographical indication (PGI) designation – Melannurca Campana.
